| How did Arizona end up with the best record in the National League? |
|
They had the lowest team batting average in the NL (.250), and they scored the 3rd fewest runs (712) . |

Someone said it... 'the Diamondbacks WON THE CLOSE GAMES'. They won the close games, came from behind a lot. They just got it done. They ran out every play and didn't give up until the last out was made. Their new slogan says it all 'anybody, anytime.' I like the commercial with Tony Clark, he says something like, 'we don't have that one superstar that we rely on every day to get things done. it's just a bunch of guys who go out and get things done on any given day... ...so what's harder, beating one guy? or all of us?' |

they won more games then the other teams win the close ones 2-1, 3-2, doesnt take much hitting, just timely hitting. 2 or 3 hits can win a ballgame. and when you lose, lose big. like 8-1, 9-0. that will inflate the era and the runs scored how, indeed. any NL team other than the Mets was gonna be a surprise. Yeah, Arizona has the lowest number of wins ever in history for a team to clinch the best record in the NL. That just shows how mediocre the National League is, three of the four playoff teams with less than 90 wins and the league leading team only having 90 wins. Pathetic! You came very close to answering your own question. The only thing left that you did not address is the bullpen. The bullpen kept the Diamondbacks in the race all year long and they were able to win the close games. Jose Valverde 47 saves and 2.66 and Brandon Lyon 73 games pitched in set-up and 2.68. Brandon Webb 18 wins and 3.01 kept them in the game for the relief staff. The Diamondbacks are a perfect example why a solid relief staff is so important. Valverde, 1.12 WHIP and opposing batters hitting .196 off of him, will probably not get a single vote for Cy Young and yet he was a major reason why the Diamondbacks are going to the playoffs. For those of you that think the 90 wins put up by the Diamondbacks is "pathetic" keep in mind that the NL west teams were 31 games over.500 which was by far the best in MLB. The Diamondbacks were also 5-1 against the Phillies and don't be surprised to see them do well in the playoffs. it really doesnt matter if the had the best record because the cubs r just going to kick their a** When they lost they lost big and when they won they won small. They had the shortest slump; and the entire national league SUCKS!!!!!!!!! The Mets had the best record in the NL coming into September and they missed the playoffs. Smoke and mirrors baby, smoke and mirrors. In reality look at Arizona, they have a great crop of youth. Very exciting team to watch. I expect high scoring from them in the post season. Because they know how to win, that's all that matters. Bob Melvin better get Manager of the Year. The other reason they have the best record and the lowest runs scored is because, they were 32-20 in one run games. because as the mets showed you the entire national league sucks. the rockies were able to make playoffs no one in the national league would be playoff material in the american league. |
