SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 21) - Barry Bonds is finished in San Francisco.

The Giants told Bonds they will not bring him back next season, ending a 15-year run in which he set the single-season and all-time home run records and became a lightning rod for the steroids debate in baseball.

"It's always difficult to say goodbye," Giants owner Peter Magowan said Friday. "It's an emotional time for me. We've been through a lot together these 15 years. A lot of good things have happened. Unfortunately a lot of bad things have happened. But there comes a time when you have to go in a different direction."

On his Web site, Bonds said he wasn't done.

"There is more baseball in me and I plan on continuing my career. My quest for a World Series ring continues," he said.

The 43-year-old Bonds did not join Magowan and general manager Brian Sabean at the news conference. Asked whether he had anything to add, Bonds said, "I already made my statement."

Bonds had always said he wanted to finish his career in the comfort of his hometown, where his father, Bobby, played alongside his godfather, Willie Mays. Bonds talked with Giants Hall of Famer Willie McCovey and took batting practice in the cage before Friday night's game against Cincinnati.

i think the only reason he wants to play more is just to get those 15 hits he needs to ge to 3,000
is going to be hard to find a team for him
especially with his agent boras that all he wants is big money

He will probably end up in the AL as a DH, and hell no, I don't want to see him be a Dodger.

My favorite team is the S.F Giants so he should just retire. It would be too weird seeing him play some place else. And I seriously doubt that any other team would want that kind of distraction around their ball club

La Angeles is where the place to be, theres gold em ther hills, anaheim hills that is ,where surf dudes cruz and valley girls shoot porn

Who cares about Barry...really? He needs to call it quits, he did what he set out to do (steal the HR record). I hope he doesn't end up in Atlanta, my favorite team. We need some bench players, not a doped up power hitter with bad knees.

Barry has done it all (steroids aside) except win the ring. That is what he wants. He also wants to reach 3000 hits, which is the goal of most big leaguers, it is almost a guaranteed trip to Cooperstown, NY. His days of being an every day player are DONE, so thats why he is looking to move to the AL, where he can bat all he wants, keep his legs fresh, and hopefully stay healthier than when he was an every day outfielder. 15 hits is not much left, so he's going to get it. Now, where will he end up. I believe he will stay in the Bay Area with his family. Anaheim has shown their willingness to cough up the money for a power player, Gary Matthews Jr. for instance, decent bat, excellent Center Fielder. Vladdy Guerrero, that one is self explanatory, the guy is a monster hands down. I don't follow the Angels that much, but if you put Bonds in the lineup as DH with Guerrero behind him, or vice versa, i don't see how they can't beat any other team in the league.

HELL NO BECAUSE AS A YANKEE I DON'T THEY WILL APPRECIATE HIM THAT MUCH THE MEDIA IS HELL AND PLUS THE YANKEES ARE TRYING TO GET YOUNGER

the METS OR the YANKEES

My fave team, the A's, sign Bonds. No freakin' way! Hated the guy when he was in Pittsburgh (how could a Gold Glove OF throw out the sloooow Sid Bream is beyond me) amd esp. when left Pittsburgh well before the 'roids. Once a jerk, always a jerk.

If his agent can work out a deal with a team for a lesser salary and a one year contact with an American League team, i say that he'll play again.

Who walks away from a potential 3,000 hit career?

THE ONLY REASON BARRY BONDS IS STAYING IS TO BREAK HIS GODFATHERS (WILLIS MAYS) AND HE WILL GO TO THE AL AND COME A DAIS HITTER

i hope he dont play for us too much of a distraction. and nobody here likes him.

Barry Bonds future: Very Very Rich, HOF, Alltime HR King, 3000 hit club & '08 season with an American League playing DH.

I THINK HE WILL RETIRE OR GO TO AL TO BE THE DH SO HIS LEGS WONT GET RUIN

NL Fans dont worry interleague play and possible World Series is the only time you will see him in your park again he is after a few hits and a ring the place for him to go is Boston or NY as a DH where he can sit the bench on defense and go out 4 or 5 times a game smack a HR or a Base Hit for a year win a ring and call it quits Good Luck to who ever gets him he is a salary sponge and will only take money away from another player who deserves to play GO CUBBIES!

No idea he doesnt want to quit. I wouldn't want him on my fav team even if he would bring some offense to it. I wish him the best...but i would just go out gracefully and retire.

I think I would puke if he became a Cardinal. But I know my team better than that and there's no way they would sign him. The only thing I see him doing is being a designated hitter.

His body will start slowly breaking down due to all the damage he has done to it thru the years of steroid abuse. Here's when people will finally realize the truth.
If he winds up anywhere it will be in the American League as a DH. Any team signing him is taking a huge PR gamble by alienating it's fans. This guy is toxic. Not to mention a horrible teammate.

I just want REX GROSSMAN to shape up or ship out; he's making my home team of the Chicago Bears the laffing stock of all the NFL!

Oh Boo for Bonds... There's always going to be an asterisks by his record in my book... He's tainted the game and made it something it's not. Poor sportsmanship, and dishonesty don't make for a good player... Who'd want him anyway!? Any team that chooses to have him play for them is stupid! And there's no way I'd want him on any of the teams I enjoy watching... The only fun thing about seeing him play is watching everyone boo when he get near the field.

Barry Bonds will play two more seasons in the American League then retire

He should just fade away in the sunset. But if he doesnt there are just a limited teams with openings for him, and Oakland would be the most likely one...He will have to take a huge hit on salary becuase there are better players out there to fill a DH role, and you would be buying his legacy more than his potential. He wants 3000 hits and I understand that...but he brings a lot of baggage, his legs are shot and once you hit the 40s, you can go way down very quickly. There is nothign worse than seeing a great player( I dispise Bonds but he was a great player) go into June batting .185 with 3 hrs and 10 rbis. It happened to Ruth, it happened to Mays, it happened to Banks, and think of how much the Yankees are paying Clemens to win a handful of games for them. sometimes its just better to retire and enjoy what you have done

if he plays for my team the rangers it will be a sideshow circus and he hits a few homers
