Why can't a left-handed fielder not play second base?

At a camp that I was in the coach in my scrimmage wouldn't let me play second base just because I was left-handed. He said "You can't play second because you wouldn't be able to get balls to the left of you".

Then he sticks me out in left field where you need a strong arm and I don't have a strong arm.

lefty's can play 2nd base, and a few do. he doesn't know what he's talking about. maybe you should look into getting on a different team

i feel for you. i'm left handed and im fortuante enough to play 1st base and pitcher. leftys can't play 2nd because their main job is to cover the 1st-2nd whole. also, when turning two they face th optimal direction.

why? because a right handed fielder has a better angle on it and it wouldnt take as much time but a left handed fielder would have to shift their whole body so it'd take more time so ur coach was just playin it smart

a lefty can play 2nd but won't generally bcuz a baseball diamond is designed 4 righties. a lefty has to turn his body to have a straighter throw to 1st but a righty can just throw across his body. think about it. if a lefty throws straight across his body, the ball travels toward 2nd base. Hope this helps!

Good Luck with your teams.

He is right, you wouldn't get balls to the left of you and u can't get the ball out of ur glove as fast as rightys

your coch is correct. the reason is because double plays are hard for lefties. you would have to go to the bag, catch the ball, turn your body all the way around to throw the ball, thus causing the runner to be safe because of a lack of quickness.groundballs to your left would also be difficult because of the angle of your body also.

This is just part of the discrimination that we lefties face.
I've played all over the infield (and outfield) and found few difficulties with fielding. some throws feel unnatural at first, but with practice and help with mechanics, I was able to overcome most obstacles. My biggest problem was third base, with the throw to first.
