Would a salary cap in baseball solve the game's problems?

I know it probably will never happen in my life time, but do you think a cap (or at the very least, a floor minimum amount to spend on payroll) would help solve it's problems?

A salary cap would not solve the problems, it's the "Holy Grail" of baseball. Read this: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/articl...

More appropriate, I believe, is your other suggestion, a "salary floor". There is currently no incentive for some owners (Tampa, Milwaukee, for example) to spend on quality players. Revenue sharing means that a team like NY will hand out over $60 million to the have-nots of the league. So Tampa gets their cut of this and some merchandising money and a little bit of gate receipts and that's all they need to cover $30 million of salary. They can do little work, field a horrible team and still break even. Force them to carry a roster with at least $55 million in salary and they start thinking, I better put a quality team on the field so people will come watch and more money is generated.

no way

A salary floor would do a lot more in the way of solving baseball's problems than a salary cap would.

Another thing that would help fix the game of baseball is a more effective revenue sharing system.

Football has the revenue sharing game figured out, and as a result you have a lot of parity and change in the best/worst teams from year to year.

In baseball, certain teams/owners are committed to the idea of making a profit at all costs. If they were given more money and at the same time, forced to spend more money, the games competition would be more balanced.

As it stands, teams collect from the luxury tax and revenue sharing, and the owners pocket the money rather than paying players with it. So their teams stink.

Yes. There are so many teams, like Tampa Bay, that have no chance because of teams like the Yankees who can spend hundreds of millions of cha-ching.
