Who thinks there should be a cap in the MLB?

i think it's stupid how big market teams like boston and new york and dominate with better players and teams just because the have more money to spend the royals or rockies. i also think there should be a rule with the cap that you have spend at least like 60% of the cap so stupid owners who only care about the money can't ruin the team. who do u think?

I agree that there should be a maximum cap and a minimum cap in baseball. Baseball salaries are getting so out of hand that none of the small market teams will ever be able to compete. If this keeps up, baseball will die very quickly. There's no reason that guys like Soriano and Zito and Zambrano should be getting 100+ million dollar contracts. Very few teams can even afford such a deal.

So basically if a player is really good, he either gets his choice of signing with the Yankees or Red Sox. That sure does make the rest of the teams interesting.

Mark my words, these out of control salaries are going to ruin baseball. There has to be some kind of cap that teams cannot go over, and some kind of minimum salary set so that even the cheaper teams stay somewhat competitive. There also has to be some sort of profit sharing system set in place so that all the teams have an equal shot at signing players. I mean how in the world can the Royals even be expected to compete, when they have absolutley no chance of signing a big name player. Whats the point?

I think there is already a cap and profit sharing Report It

no chance of that every happening. Attendance and profits are up all around baseball and the sport is at the peak of its popularity nationally and internationally. and there is a soft cap and profit sharing so when u go over it u pay, how else do u think the marlins turn a profit Report It

its not the yankees or red sox fault that other teams dont spend money to make money Report It

Right, I agree...

But, if anything like this is proposed, the union will strike and baseball will die, it has lost too much integrity recently...

The only way to force a reconstruction of salaries is to collude, which is illegal...I'm afraid baseball salaries are a runaway train which will crash...probably by some financial disaster brought to the paying publilc.

I think baseball should use a socialist approach........There should be a "set" payroll for the entire league and then it gets divided up equally between the teams. That way every team has the same financial chance and opportunity to make the best team possible. Then we'd REALLY have a good game on our hands, and the best team really would win! I don't see it ever happening though.

First off, a cap without teams sharing their local revenues wouldn't work. The Yanks can afford to play one player more than another teams entire roster due to their local broadcasting. And a cap would get shot dead by the most powerful union in sports. Remember how long it took for MLB to ban & test for steroids when they are illegal under US law?

If you made the cap at 100mil (w/ no local revenue sharing), many teams wouldn't be able to do the 60% minimum, not for being cheap but for not having the $$$ to begin with. If you made the cap smaller, then you are cutting salaries, which would hurt the mid level veteran players.

What teams like the Royals & Rockies should consider is either 1) try to hire away Billy Beane away from Oakland, or 2) get a disciple of his as you GM. The fact is that if you land one of the 8 spots in the postseason & you have good starting pitching you can win the whole thing. OK, Oakland hasn't won the whole thing, but they usually contend by getting good younger players that they can afford and don't break the bank trying to keep them (which would tie up too much of their limited funds in too few players and would hurt their ability to field a overall balanced team), instead trading them for good prospects just before their contract runs out. Since a cap is never gonna happen, that is the next best thing.

If not for the Patriots, the salary cap would have ruined the NFL already. But, as more and more teams copy the Pat's winning recipe, the NFL will wallow in mediocrity and eventually all the teams will finish at 8-8 and we can all learn the entire list of tie-breakers.

I think a cap would be a great idea. but the only way it will happen is that baseball is going to half to crash and the only real solution to it is a cap. but then everyones contract will have to be renegitiated. i dont see it happening anytime soon because u dont see these teams will all the money winning every year. just cuz you get the best players dont mean you win. baseball is a TEAM sport and some of these big name players get and ego and dont understand that. until say the Yankees or Redsoxs or Cubs or Cards will like 4 or 5 world series in a row it will never happen. on paper the yankees should win the series every year but i think there problem is the have to many chiefs and not enough indians.
