a salary cap would be bad. look at the NFL all the playoffs teams are mediocre it would be better with a powerhouse teams. Money doesn't get you the World Series Win but it helps out a lot. I would love to see the statistics about the teams that won the series and where all those teams fell into relation of how much they spent vs. other teams. I am sure they wouldn't fall into the lower bracket.
A salary cap would be good only if they made it the level every team could afford. And they had Profit Sharing Rules, just like the NFL The salary cap is the reason why the NFL is so popular. Every team is somewhat equal and there is no powerhouse. You could call the Patriots a powerhouse but most of the teams in the NFL are equal. I believe the MLB should have a salary cap. It would have more competition just like the NFL. If you ever watch Baseball Tonight, half the time they talk about the Yankees or the Red Sox. They can spend all the money in the world and have a ton of good players. That can get very annoying. But when you watch NFL Live, they talk about every team equally because every team has the same chance to do well.
If the MLB had a salary cap, it could COULD be much more entertaing...and you wouldn't have to hear as much about how great the Yankees and Red Sox are. Revenue Sharing is what has made the NFL the strongest sports business in the world for its owners. A cap only works with complete revenue sharing.
Yankees negotiated a 12 year $486 million dollar deal with MSG.
Royals is about $5 million a year. Any questions?
Yankees (and others) use their farm system to develop compensation to give teams like the Royals when they over pay for their top notch free agents. See Jermaine Dye, Johnny Damon, and Carlos Beltran.
I think I can develop a helluva farm system with an extra $30 million a year. Hello McFly
Royals and Marlins can't draft most (not all) Scott Boras clients because of signability. THEY HAVE LESS MARGIN FOR ERROR. Those players slide to big money teams who can afford to pay extortion money to him.
What money buys is MORE MARGIN FOR ERROR. The Marlin's and Royals can't make mistakes on players because they can't go buy a free agent to plug in a hole like the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels etc. Small market teams can get lightning in a bottle once in a while, but can't sustain it over the long haul.
Royals, Marlins, Pirates have no shot at getting the best FOREIGN PLAYERS because they can't bid like the large market teams can. This gives the big markets a player pool that is grossly more talented than the small market teams. Yankees just signed two Chinese youngsters, do you think the small market teams can make the payoffs to do that?
The Twins and A's have been exceptions but their days are numbered. The big three in Oakland are gone and they are done in the next 2 years. Twins will lose Santana and Mauer and they will be on the decline.
Royals were the best organization in baseball in the late 70's to mid 80's. That had to do with then GM Scherholz. He has done wonders in Atlanta. He left KC because he didn't get the $$$$$ he needed to compete. The Royals drew close to 3 million fans during those years. NO big media contract. Mr. Kauffman paid for everything out of his pocket. God rest his soul.
I will take Dayton Moore over Brian Cashman any day of the week if its a level playing field.
Lastly, Royals paid $55 million over 5 years for Gil Meche. Small Market teams can do that but if he gets hurt it could set them back 5 years. Yankees, Red Sox, Angels can reload using $$$$$$ not superior baseball knowledge or management skills. you win by building your farm system. you rarely win W.S by free agency. look at yankee compared with last 12 W.S winners. even when the yankees were winning it was when they were using their home grown talent not big name free agents. (Jeter, Posada, williams, rivera, ect ect. I am a Rangers fan and I don't like the salary cap either.
Revenue sharing is a good idea and I hope they keep it! Let Steinbrenner spend millions, he'll just have to pitch in a little more to spread around the league.
