Assuming hes being groomed as maybe not the next but, the future manager, if he manages NYY to a title and with his 9 gold gloves his MVP, batting titles and other accomplishment over only 11 full seasons and 3 partial seasons will that be enough to get him in as a manager / player?

As far as I'm concerned Don Mattingly should have already been inducted into the hall of fame. This is a guy who was clearly on his way to the 3000 hit club if not for his terrible back problems over the latter part of his career. He was clearly the leader of what was a pretty average Yankee team during his career. It's too bad his bad back wouldn't let him play one more season or he would have gotten his ring. Getting a ring as a manager certainly wouldn't hurt his cause.

It seems that the Veterans Committee has once again NOT done their job. There are still several ball players who deserve to be inducted but like Donny "Baseball" remain out side the hall looking in. Great Question.

He should be in already. If Cal Ripken is in (who only got in 4 the streak, his stats were never that great), he should be in. Mattingly was baseball in the late 80's, early 90's.

Me being a Huge Yankee fan i do have to answer this based on stats. Even thou Mattingly had some great seasons his overall career stats are not good enough to warrant a ticket to cooperstown . If it was not for that nagging back injury he would have put up some serious numbers consistently . Not to many players get sympathy votes based on injuies that cut there careers short anymore !!! I would say if he does get a managerial job a couple of championships should make up for the missing stats in his playing career to get him in .

well first of all he should be in already, there's no question that he was one of the better first basemen in the game in the last 20 years or so...now i do believe that longevity should be a factor in determining whether or not someone gets into a hall of fame, but mattingly still has numbers that are very close to, if not already, hall-worthy...but certainly, if he were to manage the yankees to a ring, then it would help his cause some

The back injury that Mattingly suffered halfway through his career trainwrecked his eventual Hall chances because it utterly robbed him of his power. And, as a first baseman, where historically the expectation is for lots of power, that really smothered his career. Credit cannot be given for what was not done, games not played, homers not hit. We deal with reality when considering the Hall.

That's too bad, but better players than he have been similarly derailed by injury. As a player, he doesn't belong in the Hall, and the writers have been getting this exactly correct in the voting. (He doesn't move to the Veterans Committee's purview for many years, and the VC so far hasn't shown any inclination to elect anyone, so hazarding a prediction that it ever will is pointless.)

If, however, he should succeed Torre as Yankees manager and guide the team to a plurality of championships (one simply is not enough, especially for the manager of The Yankees), he would have significantly better chances of winning a plaque that way, and going in as a manager.

But let's see him get hired for the job before calling the minter.

PS. As a thought experiment, imagine the 1996 Yankees, minus Tino, plus "1995 Donnie, aged one more year". That team probably does not win the championship.

If he won a title as a manager that would do nothing to get him in the Hall of Fame as a player. They are too seperate parts of his career.

Would have to have good coaching career. I love Mattingly but he does'nt deserve hall because injuries shortened career. If that were the case Albert Belle is in also and maybe Will Clark. Mattingly was better than Clark but before injuries derailed him he was damn good. Eric Davis was great but injuries ruined him 2. It just isn't excuse, its the hall. I think they let to many people in these days. Don Sutton are u kidding me!?
