Why are MLB managers in full uniform? Do they expect to put themselves in the game and take the field?

You don't see Tony Dungee in full pads or Phil Jackson in a sleeveless jersey on the sideline.

I thought the only tradition in MLB was going on strike.

The original reason managers wore the uniform was that back in the "old days" all managers were also players. so a guy would play third base or any other position and manage the team during his playing career. When he retires from playing if he's still the manager he keeps wearing his old uniform out of habit.

There are no more player-managers (the last one was Pete Rose) but by now it's a tradition.

The unofficial rule is that anyone on the field in a MLB game must be in uniform. That is why umpires have uniforms, bat boys in uniforms, etc.

MLB is built on tradition, and changing something like that would upset alot of purists.

besides... Tradition's don't need a reason.

(oh my gosh - I can just imagine Phil Jackson sitting courtside in full uniform - shorts and all - hahahahaha)

Tradition, mostly.

it's from way back in the day when there were player-managers. that's no longer the case, but baseball is about history and tradition, so that's why they still wear uniforms..

It's just tradition... it's kind of a "dumb" tradition at this point because, honestly ... MOST of those managers aren't in ANY shape to wearing those uniforms.

Too funny. They certainly don't belong in them. Good God. Back in the day, the coaches did play. Now they just make me feel like I have a nice body. It's not pretty my man. It's not pretty. Why do they have to slap each others asses still. Not pretty my man, not pretty.

BASEBALL I'TS WAHT IT IS. IF YOU DON'T LIKE HOW ARE THE MANAGERS DRESSED, GO AND WATCH SOCCER, WHERE EVERYBODY WEAR WHATEVER IS INDICATED BY TREIR MINDS. THE FACT THAT MANAGERS DRESS LIKE THE PLAYERS, MAKES THE GAME EVEN MORE ELLEGANT. ACCEPT IT!

Hmm...it does seem odd that 40 to 60 year old men put on baseball uniforms. But its the history of the game.

Unlike basketball, football got away from the suit-and-tie (Bear Bryant, Lombardi, Tom Landry, Hank Stram) probably for practicality reasons; who wants to walk around with a headset, a battery pack, a challenge flag, a pamphlet with all ur plays, and a crapload of wires that's attached to some kid all while wearing a suit and tie? It's much eaiser to toss on khakis and a team-colored polo.

Baseball, you dont have all those doodads and you have other coaches to relay messages and signs.

Who cares??Let the old men have a thrill.

I've often thought it would be better if other sports head coaches wore uniforms as well.

In baseball it is two things, mostly. Tradition is one. The other is that baseball managers are pretty much the only head coaches expected to go into the playing field during the game. The go to the pitcher's mound, they go to talk to the umps. They go to check on hurt players. They are more a part of the game than coaches in other sports. After all, you never see Tony Dungy go out to talk to Manning, or Jackson go to center court to discuss the next play with Kobe.

It's Professional baseball

It started in the 1800's when the, what we call a manager now, was called the captain and he did play in the game. At that time the manager had nothing to do with the game itself, but rather he made arangement when the travelled, stuff like that. After the turn of the last century the captain became the manager and the tradition stuck.

Because BASEBALL, unlike other sports, is a T-E-A-M sport and that means everybody associated with the team represents the team.
What sport hasnt had a strike. God bless America that employees are represented and have backing against the corporate machine.

It makes their butts look cute

Because only uniformed personnel are allowed on the field during a game. That's also why batboys have uniforms.

Honestly partner - this question is asked every week. I bet you thought you were being funny, and the first to ask it.

Some managers and coaches just look great in a uniform. For example, Don Zimmer:

He looks like he is ready to go out and play.
