HANDS DOWN, it's Johnny Bench! |
|
I-Rod, Joseph Patrick Mauer (born April 19, 1983) is a major league catcher in Major League Baseball for the Minnesota Twins. Hey Jesse: Good question. There's been lots of great ones: Berra, Bench, Fisk, Campanella, and we're seeing one right now, a local boy named Mike Piazza. But one guy who must have been a great catcher and a great ballplayer was Elston Howard, who played for the Yankees back in the 60's. The reason I say he was a good one was because when he came up to the majors, the Yanks moved Yogi Berra to the outfiled to make room for Howard. So if you're good enough to displace a Hall of Fame player from his position, you must be pretty good. Overall, I would say it was Johnny Bench of the Reds. Carlton Fisk in second , Bob Boone and Yogi Berra were great as well and also Mickey Cochrane because he had decent speed and hit for a great average for a catcher. If you wanted to have this man but at the end for defensive purposes because he was not a great hitter but a great defensive catcher of the 1910's and 1920's I would go with Ray Schalk. Mr. Bench or Ivan Rodriguez. I would say either Johnny Bench or Yogi Berra. Johnny Bench. HE revolutionized the art of throwing out runners, put up great offensive numbers and won 3 world series titles. Not to mention rookie of the year in 1968, 10 Gold Gloves, NL MVP in 1970 and1972 and World Series MVP in'76. Berra, Bench, Campanella, Ivan Rodriguez Pudge or tek Johnny Bench Ivan Rodriguez Pudge or Bench That's a hard question for me, but I'm going to go with Joe Mauer. My second choice would be Johnny Bench but I hate him, so Mauer is my man! Yogi Berra. Since I think that Pudge Rodriguez was on the juice, I say Bench. Bill Dickey, Yogi Berra, Johnny Bench, I-Rod, Benito Santiago, Carlton Fisk, Thurman Munson - take your pick! Pudge. Pudgey Pudgey Pudgey Pudge. Considering he is like better for his age now that he is not on steroids, I would say he is still the best. Either Bench, Berra, or Fisk. Roy Campenella Carlton Fisk Johnny Bench. Josh Gibson, who played for the Negro Leagues, deserves mention here. the greatest catcher in baseball history never played in the MLB. big josh gibson. records for the negro leagues were poorly kept, but it's estimated he hit over 800 homers. people call josh gibson the babe ruth or the negro leagues but i call babe ruth the josh gibson of the inferior white mlb. josh was the man. Johnny Bench!!!! John Bench hands down. You can't go with someone who is still playing in my opinion. Ok well since the question was "Who is the best catcher in MLB history?" I would have to say Bench. That being said you have to agree with the guy who brings up Big Josh Gibson. From what I've learned the man was a monster. and of couse as the other guy said stats were not kept very well. So Best catcher in MLB = Bench. I think Johnny Bench is the greatest catcher. He revolutionized the postion by putting his hand behind his back so he wouldn't get hit by foul balls. It got to the point where players wouldn't steal off of him because he was so good at throwing runners out. Johnny Bench.Loved the Big Red Machine when they were playing (Cincinnati Reds) |
