I was wrong, Manny Ramirez can speak English, barely I might add. For a guy who has lived in the USA for 23?

years since 1984, he doesn't speak very well at all, and is extremely arrogant. He refers to himself in the third person, as "I'm one of the best players in the game" several times and he calls himself a "bad man" He sounds like a block head, looks like a cocky jerk. I'm surprised he even did this interview, I have never heard/seen an interview with Manny until now. He's so arrogant, he also says, "even when I'm feeling bad, I still get hits" Either he is stupid, arrogant, just doesn't know the language that well or all of the above. If he is that cocky in his native tongue Spanish, I don't think he would have many friends. He needs to tone down his ego. What do you think? Watch the clip and respond.

The point is, he's lived in the USA for over 20 years, he's a US Citizen and he barely speaks English. Learn English, this is America, the NATIONAL LANGUAGE IS ENGLISH, NOT SPANISH.

What do you expect for such a careless person? He doesn't care to win why should he care to learn a language?

Any great sports athlete talks trash and refers to himself in grandiose manner. Get over yourself and stop hating on Manny. Manny is Manny and thats all there is to it. Manny backs up his talk with his bat. I've seen the press conference. I can, without issue, understand fully what Manny is saying. Quit hatin and realize, Manny is a HOF'er in uniform.

He's cocky but he can back it up. Which of those statements is not true? He is one of the best players in the game and even at his worst, he's still better than 95% of any other player.

Also, he keeps to himself, is never in trouble with the law and there is no hint of steroid use around him unlike most other players of his calibur. He's a harmless space cadet who happens to be a genius at hitting a baseball. Nothing wrong with that.

When Manny says, "I'm one of the best players in the game", he is speaking in FIRST PERSON not Third Person. If he were speaking in Third Person he would say, "Manny Ramirez is one of the best players in the game", or "Manny Ramirez: he is one of the best players in the game."

And, actually, both of the examples you cite are perfect, grammatical English. And, if you think they are not, then you are the one who doesn't know English very well.
.

You can't turn around and knock the guy for his English. I don't care if he has lived here for 50 years. It is his second language. When he goes home, he speaks spanish. When he is with his friends, he speaks spanish. When he is in the clubhouse, he speaks spanish and a little english with the guys that don't speak spanish. When he needs to understand English, when the manager tells him something, he knows what is said. He doesn't get paid to speak like a college professor. He gets paid to play baseball and that is all he should be looked at for. Rickey Henderson talked in the 3rd person all the time. He could do that and so could Manny. They are great players and again, they aren't get paid for their public speaking skills. They are getting paid to perform on the field. Every pro athlete has a certain level of cockiness. That is what makes them so good. If they go out there thinking they aren't good, great or even the best, they will not perform to the best of their capabilities. Don't judge any of these players you see on tv by anything else then their baseball abilities. They aren't lawyers or doctors, they are athletes.

Manny Rameriz, (Idiot Savant) a mentally defective person with an exceptional skill or talent in a special field, as a highly developed ability to play music or to solve complex mathematical problems mentally at great speed.

WOW, looks like a lot here are on Manny's side....

lol, me too

you guys put up some good answers here, good work & thumbs up.

using the word i is 1st person. Why are people worrying about Manny. He is from WASHINGTON HEIGHTS. There you dont need to know english to get around. He's doing the third best on the team (behind Beckett and Ortiz). Worry about those strugglers at the bottom of the line up or the bad starting pitching(minus Beckett).

Who cares? Once again, what does this have to do with baseball? What does this have to do with Manny's performance on the field? The guy speaks broken English. We get the point. Who cares?

Is your quality of life somehow lowered by the fact that someone who you have no relationship with does not speak English? I can see getting upset about someone that you actually deal with not speaking English well, but unless you have to converse with Ramirez on a regular basis, why should you care? I personally would love to have Ramirez on my team, and to be honest, I wouldn't care whether he spoke English, Spanish, Swahili or Pig Latin, as long as he could hit.

Sounds like you鈥檙e a latent bigot. Wow鈥?You鈥檙e riding the guy鈥檚 scrotum because he doesn鈥檛 speak perfect English? Get a life. Aren鈥檛 you aware that baseball is THE sport of the AMERICAS鈥lural鈥eaning North, Central, South, and the various island chains. They speak primarily Spanish in parts of the Americas outside of North America. So鈥on鈥檛 be surprised if any number of baseball players don鈥檛 exactly speak English as well as a North American. Try focusing your attention on the game of baseball and not character assassination.

He IS one of the best players in the game. He was being honest, not arrogant.

The only thing you said that made any sense whatsoever was that he doesn't know the language that well. All of his family, and most of his friends speak Spanish, not English. You don't get better at a language unless you use it frequently. English is the hardest language in the world to learn.

Stop being so close minded.
.

I am tired of hearing the expression "Manny being Manny." It should be "Manny being held accountable." Here is a guy that came from the ghetto and basically has no other job skills. If it wasn't for baseball he would be flipping burgers at McDonald's. Baseball was his one shot at upward mobility in life and his attitude is that he doesn't care? Maybe the Sox shouldn't care if Manny misses a few paychecks. He is wealthy and it would not be "the end of the world" if he missed a few checks. People make excuses for him. No one is held accountable for their actions. This is not a beer league softball team. Being a ballplayer in the BIG LEAGUES means more than performing on the field, it requires the attitude to match. Manny is living the dream and getting a BIG paycheck to go along with it. He has no appreciation for it at all.
