exactly what are the duties of the bench coach? and if you can give me a rundown on specific duties of any other type of coach (manager i understand already), that would be helpful.

The bench coach is the right hand man of the manager. For example, if the game is in the 7th and the manager wants a pinch hitter up for so and so in a certain situation he will tell the bench coach. The bench coach is in charge of the dugout for every little thing that is going on. He is probably the MVP of all the coaches on the staff.

I think they are basically to keep the manager company-they didn't have them during the 50's and 60's, and the game seemed to do just fine.

They keep the bench players company and when the head coach gets ejected they are the temp head coach
