The Yankees offer to Torre was a slap in the face?

Nothing like offering 5 mil when he's been making 7.5 mil. The man took this team to the playoffs numerous years and led this team to 4 World Series wins and 3 in a row. The only other team that's won 3 in a row in the last 34 years of Major League Baseball is the Oakland A's of the early '70's. Quite an accomplishment for both Torre and the Yankee organization. Was this the Yankees, and Steinbrenner's way, of getting themselves off the hook? Figuring they could lowball Torre therefore not having to fire him. Is the future Hall of Famer's A Rod and Mo Rivera next to leave?

Kris, YOU nailed it! It was a good PR move. Knowing if they fired Torre outright it would upset many of the diehard Yankee faithful.

They made him an offer they knew he'd refuse. This makes it MUCH easier for them to explain him not being their manager next year.
.

The money matter wasn't a slap to the face so much as the fact that he was offered ONE year. I wouldn't sign, if I were Torre, for any less than 4 years.

I heard that the offer was laden with performance bonuses -- more money for winning each round of playoffs, which would have made it close to his last contract with a WS win.

I think it was a fair deal.

This IS the Yankee way now. Whoever they get to replace Torre will get the same treatment when they are replaced. Look how they treated Zimmer and Stottlemyre.

Nobody outside of New York cares. People are sick of this story and wish ESPN, Fox etc. would quit talking about it. Hire somebody and shut up.

Reckless, you're soooooooooo sensitive. You must be an authority on douchebags. Why is that?

No. They are simply asking him to move on.
5 million a year still makes him the "HIGHEST" paid manager in the game by far. He has nothing to cry about.

He won't get near that anywhere else.

This guy has not been able to win the big one with the most talent in the league. The Yankees deserve better.

Somewhere tonight, Suzyn Waldman is crying...

Dude, if youre a manager who makes 5,000,000 a YEAR dont you think youve made it?

To me, Torre declining the offer shows greddyness. They offered a 69 year old manager who couldnt bring the Yanks to a championship 6 years in a row but yet they offer him money that would be making Torre the highest paid manager in baseball.

Whats in the past is past, sure the Yankees '96 - '01 run was great but thats in the past. They need a manager NOW who can win something.

Have to agree with Shiloh here. It isn't the most important thing to ever happen in baseball. There's no need to cover it ALL.DAY.LONG.

It would have been a good offer if after the Yankees lost in the World Series and then the playoffs the next year or two and Georgie Boy made this deal to Torre. It would have been a fair deal with good incentive.

But now it is just a slap in his face for not making it past the first round. I wanted him to stay but good for Torre for not taking that b.s. I am rooting for whatever team he coaches.

P.S. Nice karma Guy-Blow...
It's Shiloh you asshole.

Sorry I had to throw that in...especially since you're a douchebag.

With the talent the Yankees have had the last 12 years you can have Norv Turner in there coaching and they would win! Joe Torre is a great coach but has been given a contract offer to match his performance level the last few years. I think 1 yr 5 mil was a legit offer. The Yankees can have Mattingly, Giradi or LaRussa come in their and still win games!!

I'm not a Yankees fan but I feel that the Yankees were very rude and disrespectful to Joe Torre. They did him wrong and he deserved better then that. Good for Joe Torre for holding his ground and standing up for his rights.

Yes I have to lean to what your saying and as far as Mo Rivera is concerned yea let him go better to let a guy a little early than hang on to long, ARod let him go bankrupt some other team, A team will NOT win with A ROD due to not being able to afford the quality pitching and role players. The Yankees lost the edge when Paul O'Neil and Scott Brochus retired and when they dumped Mel Stottlmyer and deff PO the baseball gods by canning Popeye Don Zimmer. I have to say this is a fine day for us Yankee haters its the beginning of the end for them. Look $$$ does not buy one title the Colorado Rockies are a prime example of what GREAT defense with good pitching can do as well as timely hitting and good chemistry. Tough Luck NYC going to be a real pleasure to Finlay fill that 6ft hole I have dug for ya!

The slap in the face came during the divisional series. I think they could have said $50, 000 or 50 million and he would have turned it down. And I think they knew that. Now they can say, oh, we didn't fire Torre. And I think that's okay with him too. A fly on the wall probably could tell you HOW Torre said no. It probably would be flagged here on Y/A

i think the slap in the face was that his incentives were 1 mill to make the alds, 1 mill to make the alcs, 1 mill to make it to the ws. that doesnt make sense, it should be increasing. it should be 1 mill to make alds, 2 mill to make alcs, 3 mill to make ws, and 4 mill to win the ws. it make sense to increase the pay as you advance the playoff ladder. its like for regular guys, why work harder and overtime when youre getting paid the same? same goes for torre.
