American or National League, how are teams divided between the two leagues?

I just saw the baseball game between the American and the National Leagues and to me, it doesn't really make sense. What makes a team part of the American League, is it location, longevity, or maybe the score board?
Please someone explain this to me!

Actually the leagues are not equal. The National League has 16 teams and the American League has 14 teams. Im not sure how and why the teams were chosen to be in their respective leagues. I do know the National League was created before the American League. If I'm not mistaken the Milwaukee Brewers switched from the AL to the NL some time ago.Teams from the same city are always in seperate leagues. New York Yankees(AL), New York Mets(NL)- Chicago Cubs(NL), Chicago White Sox(AL). Both Leagues have a western, central, and eastern division.

AL West- Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Seattle Mariners, Oakland A's, Texas Rangers

AL Central- Detroit Tigers,Cleveland Indians,Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Royals

AL East- New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Devil Rays

NL West- Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, San Francisco Giants

NL Central- Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinatti Reds

NL East- New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Florida Marlins,Washington Nationals

Its random so the leagues are even in numbers and locations Anaheim is American, LA is national. I used to have a theory that there was a color scheme to the logos. I can't really explain it though.

Teams have been in each league for a long time. Milwaukee switched to even things out. l6 in National and 14 in American. Location for all is throughout the states.
