Do you agree that baseball is the sport in which the statistics are the most meaningful?

It seems to me that baseball was made for its statistics like HR, RBI, AVG, ERA, IP, AB, BB, SB, K, OBP, SLG, and on and on. The statistics can also you give you a reasonably accurate impression of a game. What I mean is, a baseball box score gives you a good mental picture of how a game went, even if you didn't see it or hear it on the radio. I don't think that is really the case with most other sports. In sports like hockey and football, the statistics are of marginal use at best. No stat effectively tells you how good a hockey defenseman is, or how good a blocker an offensive lineman is, etc.

What's your take?

baseball is the only sport with statistics that have any real meaning. other sports have a few but only baseball was seemingly created for us stat-o-holics.

Em....yes. (I think baseball fans already know that)

Yea for shure, in baseball its all about the numbers

I agree~

yea, But too bad baseball sucks

I agree that baseball is the sport that keeps the most statistics. But, meaningful? That's another question.

baseball is most definately the sport where the statistics are the most abundant. but track and cross country and swimming woud be where they are most important. whereas a player in baseball may be hitting .110 this month but next month may hit .330 but a trackster who runs a 7 min mile this month will most definately not run a 4 min mile next month. therefore coaches who can reasonably play the ball player on the hunch that hes "due" would be insane to enter that particular runner into a college track meet.

Baseball is statistics happy. Going over stat after stat is one reason why baseball is fun.

That's why baseball is my favorite sport! I love statistics!

Of course if you look at it there's a stat for everything. Your sallary isn't based on your popularity or on how many spectacular plays but on your statistics, for instance the Oakland A's.

I agree and for some reason, detailed stats are just a lot more interesting than any other sport. There just seems to be more to it than just another stat too. It's unexplainable but it's awesome.

Other then Hockey I can鈥檛 see any of the other major sports being able to hold a candle to the stats in baseball. There is a guy who played in the 60鈥檚 for the Eagles who has the most sacks in a game about 19 (which was more then most players will get in a season) and since sacks weren鈥檛 registered until the 70鈥檚 he is a nobody. (Check out NFL Films they did a great shoot on him) and basketball just started block shots in the 80鈥檚 so how good are there stats. Baseball you could actually go back and check who was the best hitter in a 1-2 count with 2 outs.

The only misleading stat is hits. A team could have 15 in one game and only score a run. But yes, stats tell you everything...caliber of hitting, fielding, running, pitching...etc etc!

Suuuuuuuuuure i guess.

Baseball statistics give a true(er) measure of a players capability/ability/performance than those of the NBA,NFL,NHL...Every facet of baseball is covered by an accurate stat...

>Sport = "diversion, athletic game or pastime, recreational activity"<....A lot of activities fall under the broad definition of "sport" but I think most of us understand the difference between "sport" and "sports" ...

ya it really does help.....esp if you dont get to watch the game. I'm stuck here on campus and i can't really watch my games or dont have time to but it really helps to see what went on... The other sports like football, hockey and basketball are sometimes hard to understand.....

well yeah i agree that mlb stats r more meaningful.
but in football if a guy rushes 4 over 100 yards thats a good game
same 4 100 yard receiving games.but yeah ur right its not that impressive.2 me baseball is all stats know what i mean,u can feel it.

Because baseball is the oldest

well baseball is a sport where you never stop counting cause every pitch changes everything
