Yes, he is great, he won 20 games four years in a row. I thought you were talking about Dave Stewart the guitarist! When he was in his prime, Smoke was the best pitcher in the league. Regular season and especially playoffs. HOF player for sure. Smoke just dominated everyone. His prime years can match-up with the whose who in the history of the game. He had some really good season but no way is he a HOF player. He has been eligible for a while now and doesn't even come close to getting enough votes. He was 168-129 with a 3.95 ERA. He pitched in the dead ball era. He had 4 twenty win seasons (87,88,89,90) and only once in those 4 years did he have an ERA under 3 (1990). He was not a dominant player over a long period of time. He was good, not great! He was good for the A's... dave stewart is one of the black aces... Yeah his stare was awesome. But he was the most softspoken guy. Yeah, he was tough. He pitched in an era when going 5 or 6 innings wasn't considered a big deal. He and his contemporaries weren't satisfied with this "quality start" nonsense. |
